An original seat was a pan style seat. It had a hinged type set up right underneath that would allow the seat to be lifted up from the front so it wouldn't get wet from due or rain. This was all mounted to a round pipe that went straight down to start with and then curved foreward in a downward rounding frontward way so that it was level where it bolted on tranmission top. It had a piece of tin that was shaped and attached to the pipe that created a tool box or small cubby hole so to speak. It also had a spring on the front of transmission mounting area that provided a little flexibility. Heavier people often would cuase this spring to break and then these seats were really rough riding with a broken spring. Many seats were replaced with an aftermarket seat assembly rather than replacing just the broken spring. If you ever run across one that is good, wedge something underneath the rear of lower end of pipe and see the difference in the ride. I had a piece of chain under mine one time and thought the spring had broke before I even looked down. I have an original seat for a 42 on my 42H and since I am a lighter person I have no problems with the breaking spring thing. I really think it sits you on the tractor better than those aftermarket seats.
