Taking a bath with an H

Posted by Michael Soldan on September 04, 2001 at 13:47:22 from (216.46.130.45):

Yesterday I got earnest about getting my rusty H cleaned up so I could begin the task of preping it for painting. I headed to the farm with my pressure washer, 50' of hose, and extension cord , a gallon of varsol, a squirt applicator and a parts cleaner brush. I applied a liberal coating of varsol to all areas that had the appearance of being greasy. One rear wheel was the worst, covered with1\2 inch of grease and dirt from a leaking axle seal. I have completed all seal replacement at this point. The brake drum seals, axle seals and pto seal have all been replaced. Having let the varsol soak for some time I gave rusty H its first pressure washing and was pleased at what came off in the first round. Over the afternoon I repeated this proceedure three times. At the second interval I used the parts brush and scraper to get the thick tough spots started. At the end of the day I was pleased with the results. Beneath this dearth of dirt lies a great old H that runs like a top, doesn't smoke ever and has a governor set up that hauls even to the point that it may need to be tamed down a few rpm's. I took it through the yard in 5th wide open and I reached for the throttle to slow it down, I've done that many times with the M but this H winds up like an ASA super late model. The rear rim was revealed as almost new condition under that grease and dirt. My next move will be to bring the H home from the farm. I will take it to the tire shop and get the rears unloaded then it will come to my shop where it will get the oven cleaner treatment on some of the tough little gobs that the varsol wouldn't loosen. At this point I will take a wire wheel to the tractor especially the underside and inside the side rails, around the rear transmission plug. I would estimate that I got 99% of the grease off the tractor with my method. I am going to pass on the sand blasting and although it will take many hours I am opting to use my array of sanders and grinders to clean off the tractor and prep it for priming. I have the hood ,grill, fenders, airbreather, and seat assembly painted and hanging in the shop. The big task will be removing the gas tank ,steering column and light bar and preping them.At that point the tractor is pretty well stripped down for preping. I've heated all the rim nuts and put anti-seize on them so wheel removal should be simple. "The best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray and leave us not but grief for promised joy" And so in the word of John Steinbeck I have great plans to get this H painted in the next few weeks but who knows...they could go astray... I am always interested in hearing from everyone on this forum. If you have some ideas for cleaning up tractors post them, I'll be glad to hear what works for you. Incidentally by the time I went home rusty H was fairly clean and I was covered in grease and dirt..a fair exchange for a Farmaller...Mike in Exeter Ontario
