A 12 volt coil is designed to operate on 12 volts and therefore does NOT need a ballast/dropping resistor. Remember that the coil and condensor are matched to each other. If anything would need to be changed with coil, it would be the condensor. If abnormal point life were to happen with the 12 volt coil, I would think that changing the condensor to one more compatable to the 12 volt coil would be more reasonable than adding a ballast resistor. It has been my experience that the original condensor works just fine most of the time. As I recall there is a rule of thumb that can be used to select a better condensor. It has to do with wheither the points pit or not. Point should erode but not pit. Too big a condensor will cause the points to pit on one side and too small will cause the points to pit on the other side. Maybe someone else who has a 12 volt coil set-up knows which condensor would be a good choice. I don't think all 12 volt coils are the same, therefore not just any candensor will be perfect. If I were going to go to a 12 volt coil I would get the coil and condensor from the same application in order to avoid the experimenting. Wish I could be more helpful.

Jon's Allis has a small front loader and though it doesn't carry much, it serves his needs. It was the hard starting and low power that made him think it was time to replace the old girl. Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start
