Yep, getting at that main jet screw is a real adventure on a 300U. I've got to the point where I just disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold elbow connection to get a straight shot at it. For light-duty work you'll want the screw about 1-1/2 to 2 full turns off of its seat. Screw it in clockwise all the way it will go (if you count turns while doing this you'll know where you're starting from), then back it out counterclockwise. You should loosen up on the packing nut before making these adjustments - watch what you're doing since loosening the nut will change the adjustment of the jet screw if you're not careful. Heavier work like plowing, etc. call for more turns out from the seat, with the maximum being about five full turns. Definitely sounds as though you're running too lean, so adjusting the main screw should be your fix, assuming there isn't a problem somewhere in the carb. Good luck!
