If you have a factory remote valve, you can get dual action (up/down) by connecting the top of the cylinders to the return line from the remote. This valve connects to the fill tube on the hydraulic belly pump via a Tee fitting. The same thing could be done with an aftermarket valve. The point is, if you do this, as oil goes out to one end of the cylinders, it returns from the other end, so the volume required is less.

I am running a 1950 M with a Saginaw 3-point on a belly pump with factory remote. It has dual 3x8 cylinders, and will lift anything the tractor is heavy enough to hold. With down force, you can easily raise the tractor's rear wheels off the ground. I use a heavy 8 ft rear blade and 6 ft brush hog with this, and it works great.

The only problem is that the fill tube tends to blow out some oil if I keep the vent open with the remote valve activated. I can't close the vent because the belly pump seal is not that great, and internal pressure will blow oil out the shaft seal. Guess I need to replace the seal.

As Haas replied, I think you'll be fine with single acting from the standard pump connections if you just need one-way action (lift only). Just be sure to put vent plugs on the tops of the cylinders. Have fun with this, and holler if you need any help with the plumbing; lots of people on this board have put 3-point hitches on M's.
