I have no idea how jeff's reply is getting the gears out.. Here is how to do it.. I replaced all the tranny bearings this past weekend in one of our Hs, so it is all fresh in my mind. Since you stated below that the case was separated from the rest of the tractor, I assume that the axles and differential has been removed also. This will make things easier. To remove the hyd coupling, you will need to do something to lock the countershaft in place ( I usually put the tractor in two gears at once) but since you have the upper shaft removed, you can lock the shaft with a small piece of angle iron. Be careful not to exert too much pressure, as you could break a tooth on the gear. With the countershaft blocked, take a piece of flat iron and place it in the slot on the coupler, and unscrew the coupler from the shaft. with the coupler removed, unbolt the bearing retainer, and use a punch or small bolt to knock the bearing out of the front of the trans housing. Next you will need to remove the snap ring that retains the rear bearing on the countershaft. This snap ring is on the rear portion of the shaft behind the bearing. With the snap ring removed, I have used two options in removing the bearing. one method is to thread the hyd coupler back on the countershaft, and hit the coupler with a brass mallet until the bearing and shaft have been knocked past the seating surface of the bearing. with the bearing in this position, take a punch and knock the bearing off ( this is done by placing the punch thru the area that the bearing sits, and hitting the bearing off of the back of the shaft make sure you rotate the shaft so that you hit the bearing at different pints) The other method is to take a punch and knock the bearing out of its race. When I use this method I generally have someone hold the shaft in place. once again, make sure you place pressure evenly on the bearing. hit the bearing from the right side and then the left so that the bearing doesnt bind. With the rear bearing removed, pull the shaft thru the bearing race until the front of the shaft has fully entered the gearbox. then just lift the front, and the shaft will come out thru the top of the gearbox.

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
