Robert - Do you now have a 12 volt battery installed? And do you have an ammeter or a voltmeter now installed on the tractor? (can't read "18 volts" with an ammeter!) However no matter which type of meter you have, 18 volts or 18 amps after an extended run is excessively high. Presuming a fully charged 12 volt battery, a voltage reading of 14.5 volts and charge rate of 2 - 3 amps is right (cut the volts in half and double the amps for a 6 volt system). Volts/amps higher than that will fry the battery after a while. A high charging rate means either a bad (or the wrong) voltage regulator, or a wiring error.
