Old Rusty H. Constellation Prize-Pistons/Sleeves Are Out!

My goal this summer was to get Old Rusty unstuck. I just got #2 and #4 pistons/sleeves out. #2,3,4 cylinders all look good. Only #1 has the rod damage. What I learned was using the 12 ton bottle jack, 3/8 log chain and a sturdy stand for the jack and log chain pressure, pushed the pistons/sleeves up between 2 to 4 inches. To get them out from that point, I ended up using my 18" long by 3/4" thick breaker bar from my 3/4 socket set. I used the sledge side of a log splitting maul to pound the units out. A 3# sledge would have been more ideal but it was at the farm. I made sure that I was pounding on the piston casting on the pin. Several times the bar would slip and it would get stuck between the rod and the piston. A few bangs sideways on the bar would release it from the piston and I would try again. I do think the PB Blaster was a better penetrant than the Marvel Mystery Oil or WD 40.

Old Rusty will be in hibernation for now. I appreciate all the emails on tractor/engine offerings. Hopefully the rebuild will start within a month or so. It was not running for probably 10 to 20 years so I am in no hurry.
