Back when I was 9, my dad bought me a Wheelhorse 1077, with snow plow and deck with chains for $175. We had gotten it running and I plowed and mowed with it for the next 2 years, and I could never wait to start plowing, blizzarding or not, there was nothing like zipping up and down the drive way, and finally plow it to perfection, unlike some of the messes he'd leave with the truck! I'm 16 now, and all I can say is, do whatever it takes to kindle his interest in tractors, and I know alot of people my age that would have turned out far better if they were into something constructive at that age and stuck with it, rather then move on to drugs and getting in trouble..etc.
