1066 crown pinion

We just took one of our old 1066's apart for a a bad gear in the high/low range gear box.And we had a hard time with the gear and splined sleeve on the pinion shaft.The splines are slightly twisted on this pinion shaft.We had to warm up the splined sleeve to get in to slide off. The gear teeth on both the crown and pinion look good and if we do reuse it we will check it for runout and straigthness. We would could get this assembly back in by pressing it together inside the gear box. Not an easy place to press something back together. What we were wondering is if it would be ok to but in a good use pinion. Or if were asking for trobble mix and matching our crown and a used pinion? Or if we should just break down and buy a new set, But this would be the most expensive fix.I was told $1000 canadian for a new set. Also this pinion shaft is the one with larger bearing & smaller bearing set.We were told that now the newer ones use the same size bearings for both, such as on the 1086's. We were wondering which is the better set up for a bearing pakage? Were not in a hurry this is just a summer project and we have two other old 1066's for back up.This is a little bigger project than we usually do in the home work shop. But our time is cheap during the slower part of summer.Also we have a local fellow that works for the case/Ih dealer that moonlights check up on us amatures and bales us out in we get in over our heads. Every penny counts these days. Thanks in advance for good advice and everybody have a safe year.
