Frustration with H electricals

I recently split a 1950 H to replace the rear seal. Before I split the tractor, the generator worked exellently. I had to disconnect the wires on the generator to plit the tractor;and upon putting the tractor back together, the generator will not put out anything even if the tractor is running at full throttle. I've checked and rechecked to make sure that all the wiring is correct, including positive ground for the battery. I've cleaned all the connections on the regulator and in the electrical box. I unbolted the steering column from the platform but cleaned the bottom of the post and the platform, so i'm pretty sure the post has a good ground to the platform. The regulator is only a few years old and is or was in great shape before I started messing with it. I've put a newly rebuilt generator on with no success. I've tried grounding the generator F terminal to the generator frame and to the tractor. I've tried to polarize the generator by touching the F terminal and the Bat terminal on the regulator. I tried touching the Gen and Bat terminals on the regulator-- which made the ammeter show a large discharge. I tried touching the negative terminal of the battery to the F terminal on the generator. I tried, out of desparation, forcing the points in the regulator closed which made everthing get very hot with a large discharge showing on the ammeter (the ammeter is half a year old). When I split the tractor, I never touched anything on the regulator or in the box. What's going on here?
