grass board and rod on Cub-22 mower

I am about to put my dad's 1950 Cub back into service as a mower. I have the original manual that shows the setup for the sickle bar mower, but I have one question that the manual doesn't tell me. What is the purpose of the grass board and the grass rod? I still have the rod, but the board has been missing for years now. Neither seems essential for operation, but it's driving me nuts trying to figure out what their function is.
