Have you ever had a problem with a car or other water cooled engine having heating problems. If you have, you have reason to want to use distilled water in your radiator. Tap water, in most cases, has large amounts of calcium and other minerals in it. It causes scaling in radiator cores as well as water jackets of the engine block. Antifreeze solution helps to a point, but when you have an iron block that is partially rusty, don't make the situation worse. The same is true for your batteries. If they need water, it should be pure. Electrolyte comes from the Sulfuric Acid that is added to new batteries. I would not reccomend using softened water for fillups. I do not think you can be sure how well the salt is flushed out after the regeneration cycle.
