Dave - Punch below for the diagram you need. (Presumes the alternator you've got is a Delco internally-regulated unit). Note that this setup requires you swap the existing push-pull ignition switch for a DPDT (double pole/double throw) switch. If you prefer can keep the existing ignition switch, but you'll then need to add a 2nd on-off switch to control the alternator instead, as Don suggests below. But you'll also need to remember to flip the 2nd switch off every time you shut down the tractor, otherwise you'll drain the battery.
