A couple of thoughts:

1 - (to FC) - Those small solar chargers are technically "solar current generators" with the capability of delivering their rated current output up to a bit over 12.6 volts. However their internal resistance is so high they can deliver full current (20 milliamps or something) into a 6 volt battery without risk of overloading the solar cell. This means you won't need to mess with series current-limiting resistors, etc. Bottom line is you can probably safely hook a "12 volt" solar charger direct to a 6 volt battery and it will supply it's modest charging current in bright sun without any problems.

2 - (to Ludwig) - A healthy 6 volt battery will hold enough charge to start a tractor for several months at least. Key is to have the battery fully charged before it's left, and the top of the battery must be absolutely clean and dry. Yesterday I fired my Super H (stock 6 volts) for the first time since early February - battery had been on the tractor and hooked up the whole time. To my great delight she tipped over and lit right off, just as if it had been running the day before! ...Bob M
