59 560 Gas model won't start

Posted by Vincent on May 20, 2001 at 06:39:52 from (38.27.1.35):

Just got a 1959, 560 gas model Farmall, wide set front tires. Started like a charm when I bought it, though battery was not healthy. Anyway after dealing with carb problems, I drove it around everything seemed fine. Parked it, came back next weekend, and it turned over but wouldn't start because the battery finally quit. Tried jump starting, never got it to turn over except for very short moments, then just got noise indicating solenoid was trying to engage but nothing else. Pulled starter, grounded it, pushed start button, and it would start turning rather slow at first, then sped up, but not to what seemed right. Took off starter and completely went through servicing it, and checking for any problems. Ran it over to the auto shop at work, had them hook it up to their starter tester, and it took off like brand new. Someone suggested possible battery cable problems, so I took out a set I knew was good. Hooked everything up, and only got solenoid to click, but never turned over the engine. Made sure all connections at battery, and starter were clean, and had high temp. silicone grease on them. Took off guage panel, and am currently cleaning off all electrical contacts. Somehow I feel I am missing something and need help.

Engine is a 6 cyl., 12 volt, neg. ground. Bought heavy duty tractor battery, not large in size, and can't say right off hand what the cranking amps are. Even put new battery on a charger, since it came off a shelf, to ensure it was charged fully.

Also checked to see that engine would at least turn by hand, and it does. Replaced engine oil with a synthetic, after making sure engine was not using, or dripping oil when I was buying it. Have used this synthetic for 19 years in all my vehicles, lawn equipment, so I know it's good.

Would also like to know of web site(s) of people who have this tractor, it does not seem to be very common, and am having trouble finding information on it.
