John: Something which may be useful to try which may help is to lean out your main jet. The 5-full-turns-out-from-the-seat setting is mainly intended for heavy work (plowing, disking, etc.), and isn't really good for most other uses. It could be that you're building up some soot because you're running too rich for what you're doing, and it is what's staying hot and giving you the ignition after your key is turned off. For light duty use, the general tuning procedure is to turn the main jet screw in until the engine starts to miss, and then back it out about 1/2 turn. On my tractor it ends up at about 1-1/2 to 2 turns off of the seat. Running leaner should give you better gas "mileage" and reduce fouling of your plugs, also. Thanks for posting your results from your adventures so far - helps everybody to hear what the problem was, and what fixed it.
