Thor - Sounds like you're almost there indeed! But here's my thoughts on where you have now:

1 - No crank when you turn the key: Presuming you've got it wired up correctly, the only possible cause is either a bad solenoid or a bad key switch. Try putting a test lamp between the key switch "S" terminal and a good ground. Now see if 12 volts appears when you turn the key to "start". If you get 12 volts, the solenoid must be bad. If you get nothing, the problem is in the key switch.

2 - The alternator must be run up to a certain RPM before it will "turn on" (begin generating current) after startup. That's why you get nothing until you run up to half throttle or so. 20 amps (or more) is normal charge rate immediately after starting. However the ammeter should taper down to 3 or 4 amps after the motor's run a few minutes - assuming the battery is good. If it does not, it means the internal regulator is not working right and you risk overcharging the battery.
