If the radiator is full and you get the motor good and hot, it's normal to lose some out the overflow, but 230 deg sounds too high. I would flush the system good and replace with fresh coolant first. Be sure to mix the antifreeze and water before you pour it into the radiator. Before I'd pull the head, I would take the radiator to a shop and have it boiled out first. If it doesn't have a water pump, it probably won't have a thermostat. The radiator must be full for the thermosyphon to work. If all else fails you can add a water pump, this was done to a lot of C's.
