I suggest You get a manual if Your into it that deep. I & T, IHC, from a dealer, or Binder Books. Parts book would be handy too. That gear is actually a shaft, the frt drive yoke goes onto. I'm about 99% positive the differential and bull pinion shafts have to come out, so the top shaft can slide back out from the rear compartment so You can get room enough to pull the worn gear/shaft out towards the back. 5th gear and the mating portion of the 4th-5th sliding gear were most often abused because of the big split from 5 mph 4th to 16 mph 5th. Good time to check all the bearings & seals too.
