A "pre-chamber" is essentially a small chamber cylinder the head. It's connected via a passage to the main combustion chamber at one end, and to the injector at the opposite end. In operation, the piston compression stroke compresses air into the pre-chamber. Near TDC the injector squirts it's charge into the pre-chamber. A portion of the injected fuel charge immediately burns here. This causes a rapid increase in pressure in the pre-chamber, rapidly forcing the partially burned fuel and remainder of the unburned fuel charge into the main combustion chamber. The combustion process is completed in the main chamber during the piston power stroke. Advantages of pre-chamber relative to direct injection diesels include ability to achieve clean combustion with low (relatively) injection pressures, ability to use glow plug starting aids, and quieter operation. Disadavantages include higher heat rejection (= lower thermodymanic efficiency = poorer fuel economy) and a more complicated (expensive) head casting. IHC engines with pre-combustion chambers include the early 'start on gas' diesels, and the followup generation equipped with a glow plug in each cylinder. Don't know the engine model numbers off hand however. Hope this helps...
