MK: The type of testing your doing is for general use. A more involved compression test is done on aircraft piston engines. The cylinder is turned to top-dead-center of the power stroke. A constand sorce 80 lbs is fed into the cylinder and the normal leakage is noted. Most like 70-72 lbs or better. 78 lbs would be VERY good meaning there was only 2 lbs lost to the condition of the cylinder. Its done at top center because thats wher near max pressure is while running. It also does NOT depend on cranking speed etc. Even this test is not an absolute final measurement that all is perfect. It's just another test. There are more test that can spot various problems such as late spark, cam out of index, valve sticking once in a while etc and the list goes on and on. both posts had good comments. do yours with a starter and open throttle and note how even each cyl is to the others, If its fairly even with all..you may be in good shape.
