From your description, you must have a mag that was converted to work as a distributor. If I understood correctly, the coil was firing...the spark just can't find the plugs. This should work...Bring #1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Mark the location of #1 plug wire on the outside of the mag and remove the cap. Now remove the rotor and replace it so it points to the mark you just made. If the impulse is still working, and it was in time before, it should be in time and run. A true distributor doesn't have the geared rotor or impulse.
