Sam- Don't necessarily listen to what these two are saying. . .Non-detergent oil has its place. If you have just gotten a tractor that you have no idea its service history, I would use non-detergent oil. Here is the reason. You have your old Farmall model 'X'. You put 10w-40 or 30w detergent oil in it. If this particular motor has never in its life had detergent oil, you will loosen all the carbon buildup and other deposits. These deposits will then float in the oil and plug your oil passages. If they are plugged, you don't get oil to the valves, or maybe the cam or bearings. .then it locks up and you get to rebuild the engine. . .after the block has been cleaned out, you can use the new engine oils. Check with local auto supply & tractor supply stores. Ask for non-detergent oil, they should have it, most do. Over a period of months & several oil changes you can gradually switch from non-detergent to detergent if you so desire. What I am doing on a '41 AC C right now is a full oil change, and add 1/2 quart more detergent each time I change the oil. . that way I clean out the engine, but not all at once. .(first change = 3.5 NonDet, .5 Det.; second = 3 NonDet, 1 Det; ect. . ) Don't be swayed by others. Stick by NonDetergent until you either rebuild or do a slow oil switch.
