Get an owners manual and a service manual. Also recommend a parts catalog. Speaking from my MD experience, you need to go through everything on the gasoline fuel system and the ignition and get it in top shape. Also be aware all of the switchover mechanism must be working properly. When in diesel position, the switchover lifts the float in the carb to shut off the gas, changes butterflys in the manifold so air does not go through the carb, grounds out the magneto and closes the valves to the head chambers that contain the spark plugs. All must be properly adjusted. In the gas position, all is opposite to above. Also, your timing could be 180 degrees out. That happened to me on my MD. If it is backfiring through the intake when you try to start it, thay may be the problem. Also, if like the MD, the magneto rotates counter clockwise and you have to hook the plug wires accordingly. If you hook them for clockwise rotation (which seems like it should be correct), you will only have one cylinder correct and again you will get the backfiring. It may even try to run on one cylinder. If all is right, it should start easy. Good luck, let us know how you come out.
