The commutator is the copper contacts that the brushes "brush" up against. My experience is limited, but I have taken a generator apart (it wasn't working and full of dirt dauber nests) and cleaned everything inside the generator and used a dremel tool with wire brush to take the carbon/dirt off the commutator.

I put everything back together and Voila!!! It wasn't hard, but it did take 4-5 hours because I didn't know what I was doing and had to figure out the hard way. You have to polorize your regulator after you do this (I did anyway).

My theory on why it worked for a little while is that the liquid in the spray helped because it was a conductor and helped the electricity pass from the commutator to the brushes. It cut through all the "junk" until it dried out.

My thought is shine up your commutator and try it then....best of luck...BB
