Emphasis in the 1930's was on reliability. In the 1940's it was on production of tractors. In the 1950's and 60's it was on more power. In the 1970's and 80's the emphasis was on lighter weight to maximize profit.

The letter series Farmalls are fuel-efficient and over-designed. They were where tractor design reached high reliability. Slow speed, big bearings. As far as reliability and therefore successful operating hours are concerned, the letter series and equivalent wheatland versions are the best tractors ever built.

Not the fastest, highest compression, or lightest, but the most reliable and durable. Allis-Chalmers, MM and Case from the same era are close behind. More people collect John Deeres of the era because more people use IH from the same years every day.
