B.D. - Your analysis is right on - pretty well presented too! Only exception regards ignition advance. Full advance typically does not occur until the motor RPM is is about halfway between idle and full governed RPM. At idle (and hence 12 volt cranking speed) timing is still fully retarded. I'm not familiar with IHC mags, but the F-M mag on an old hand-cranked bailer motor I've got has the impulse designed up so it retards the spark an additional 10 deg or so when the impulse is activated. I presume this is to lessen the probability of a kick-back while hand cranking should magneto timing be a little too advanced. ...Bob M
