Gene - Be mighty careful if you are going to measure this much current with your meter. Many test meters have no fuse in their current-measuring side. A classic way of having one of these meters blow up in your face is to leave the leads in the current-measuring connections, and then touch the leads to a high-amperage source (such as the terminals of your battery). Even the coil current is more than I like to put through the typical 10A meter.
