As you know, there is no external control of fuel on the gas side, except the choke. To adjust the speed on the gas side, you have to remove the carburator. That is no easy task, as it is practically impossible to get a wrench on the front inside bolt (of the 4 bolts that hold the carb to the manifold). You can't get a socket on it, you can't get a boxend on it. You can get an open end on it and do about 1/8 turn or less each pull. Once you get it off, you will see a round plate on the passage where the air/gas mixture come out and goes to the manifold. To change the speed, you adjust that plate up and down. The manual calls for an open distance of 3/32 to 7/64 inch from the top plate of the carb to the plate. You also need to check that all the switchover stuff is working. The carb float is held up in diesel mode so that gas cannot flow to the carb. If that is not releasing properly on the gas side, that would limit the gas flow and cause you to have to use a lot of choke to suck gas in. Also, there are butterflys in the manifold that shut off the air flow through the carb in diesel mode, but are set to let air flow through the carb when on gas. If those are not working, you would not be getting enough air flow through the carb and again it would require choke to make up for it.

Good luck, Let me know what you find.

Today's Featured Article - Picking Corn - by Rick Nikolich. It was the day before Christmas shutdown at work and I asked our lead engineering expert Scott Andrzejewski what he was going to do over the holidays. He said that he had some corn that he still needed to pick with an antique one-row New Idea corn picker. Scott has a nice farm about an hour north of Lansing in St. Johns, MI. He wanted to get the rest of his corn in by the next day (Christmas Eve). We had about an inch of new snow on the ground and single digit temperatures. So in the bac ... [Read Article]
