The steering box is a weak area on the Super A. If you have a good machine shop close by, getting it in a-1 shape will be no problem. Take apart, replace the bearings and the bushings. You probably have wear where the arm under the box attaches to the sector shaft, and possibly wear on the shaft where the sector gear attaches. Get the machine shop to carefully mic. the sector shaft, steering arm, and the gear, build up if necessary. (Be sure to check where the grease seal rides on the shaft too, this is the only thing I didn't have checked and mine leaks a bit. You can get a new gear but it's EXPENSIVE!! I think you can get all the parts from caseIH, IF you update to the automotive style tie rods. If you keep the ball and socket tie rods, you should be able to find good used ones in the boneyards. (This is what I have done, the automotive ones don't look right.) The inside of the gearbox is pretty much the same on either style tie-rod.
This is a quick-and-dirty explanation, if you need more help feel free to email me. I've done this job on my Super A with fair success and I'm a lousy mechanic!

Al

Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
