The consensus is in. My regards gentlemen! I learned to farm with a 656 Hydro under me years ago. It would seem my affinity for them is not just nostalgic; those that have 'em love 'em, and those who've since sold 'em regret it. So here's the new program: for the transplanter and 6' tiller I need to move daaaaamn slooooow (makes a supreme seedbed), so the gear drive is out. Duane's feet cooking on top of the transmission made me hear cash register noises, so heavy drawbar work is out too. My next question would have been gas or diesel, but Aaron answered that one (the work of Satan you say). This season I'll find me a 656 Hydro Diesel, late sixties I'm thinkin', and hire out the plowing again. Next season, if all goes well, I'll look into "some cheap geared horsepower" (thanks David) to add to the stable. Maybe a 656 gear drive, or better yet some old round-fendered diesel digger from the fifties w/ duals. Boys, I wouldn't trade the troubles I've got for anything!
