Hi T Bone. Thanks for the interest. The spring and plug is a by pass. But it's attached to the screen. Normally, all fluid passes through the filter. If the filter is clogged, the spring/plug will release under the suction and allow fluid to pass through the screan and into the pump. The filter element and the oil are the only things changed from the time it worked OK 'til now when it sings a song of woe.
