1950 John Deere R Antique Tractor
| In 1949 I saw my first 'R'. It was brought into Knoxville, Iowa by the dealer there. At that time, there were few 'G's in Iowa, so the 'R' was really big. I was fascinated by the Caterpillar starting arrangment, the use of a two cylinder gasoline engine to start the diesel. John Deere used this method on the 'R'. I bought this tractor, a 1950 model 'R' a couple of years ago. I have overhauled the engine and did some minor work on the rest of the tractor in that time. I have plowed with a 4-16 plow and it does pull it well (4.5 MPH, 10 inches deep) I even picked corn with it this fall. I am going to clean and paint it next year.
