3 or 4 years ago, my son and I decided to put in a deer food plot. We deep plowed a couple of acres that had been setting for 20 years. We tore
up a bunch of roots that we thought were maple sprouts, or tree roots from the adjoining woods. We dug them out of the plow with our bare hands. Needless to say, a couple of days latter, we knew it was either sumac or ivy. Each year, in the middle of our corn season, the entire ground is covered with ivy vines as thick as grass. The local Co-Op has no answers on what chemical to use, that will kill a "wood" based weed, without killing the corn also. [We use R-R BT corn]. We want to spray about two weeks before we plant. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Check out the link I've added. You'll have to sign up to use it, but its free and you can put in what crop you're growing and what weeds you want to control and it'll give you a list of all chemicals that are labeled for that purpose. I ran yours through and it punched out quite a few responses. I didn't check them all out, but I think they're all glyphosate (round-up) active incredient chemicals However there are probably different formulations of glyphosate aimed more towards woody weed species. Otherwise if you choose to not raise corn your option will increase.

if you can find the chemical "Spike" that will do it.....and put in a small bag of sugar with it in the tank. Don't know exactly what the sugar does to it, but is sure makes the brew "hot". That would be in a 100 gallon tank, btw.

2-4D admine if I spelled right , with a little soap to go into the leave. Round up the grass about 7-days later. Spray when claim and cool. no rain in the next few days. late day maybe , I spray early to mid mornings before it gets hot.

Have a Good One !! Teddy

Hoenes, On small tender, "smooth bark" plants round up does a good job on it. Later on the "rough bark" older plants, Crossbow at the recomended rate does very well. Or Grazon and Diesel at a 4to1 mix work equally well also. This should give you some opitions.
Our application here in Central Texas are on fence lines and the like. Definately not a problem in cultivated fields here. I suggest kepping it plowed all summer long, pland wheat or oats in the fall for the deer plot and that should work. But your latitude may prevent that. We don't plant deer plots to harvest anyway. Oh well,Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Hoenes,

I use a mix of roundup, brush killer and poison ivy killer. All at 2/3 strength for the ivy. I also put in a couple of gallons of liquid fertilizer (27 -2-2 I think). The mix tank is 30 gal and is good for a couple acres. It HAS to be done in spring in about a 2-3 week window when they are growing fast. If you miss the window, you have to spray again.

With the F-ing root system those plants have, they are a real problem to kill off all the way. But if you don't get them they will just keep coming back!

Oh, DON'T try and mow them away! The "stuff" in them gets everywhere and even in the air. It's bad.

I have killed poison ivy with Roundup. Maybe that would work on your corn. Otherwise, I would leave the field idle and spray to kill the ivy for a season. BTW, does that food plot lure the deer in?

Thank you, everyone for your input. Re-KEH We tried Roundup every year, because our seed corn is Roundup Ready. It only stuns it rather than kill it. Perhaps we should leave the ground idle for a season and use a "total vegetation killer", and YES, the food plot is working. Although last year it was drought damaged, the two years before yielded good. Between the deer and the wild turkey, we could not find a single ear of corn left!
