Thought this question might raise some discussion and generate some passionate replies.
I am not an active farmer, although I was born and raised on a farm. Have two small tractors and no acreage to speak of.
The oldtimer tractor club (the Grebbetrekkers of Achterberg, The Netherlands), of which I am a member, has approx. 80 members who, among them, have some 130 tractors. Only some 20 of our members are farmers and another 20 are active in farming related businesses. But we all share the same spirit - the spirit also breathed by this board. Thank you, Hendrik

Yes, I am a part-time farmer with forest culture and pasture land. I own two David Brown`s and a JD 1120. The other time I am a glazier. We are farmer and glaziers through several generations.I think that I am till now the only one from Germany, who replies the thread. We farmers here on this great webside have all the same spirit, whereever we are located and worked day and night. Thanks to all who replies this various threads. Keep on this good work! Keep in touch!
Josef form Germany.

I have been a dentist for 18 years but this spring I plan on putting 15,000 trees in 16 acres. 8 acres of row crop, gravity irrigation corn will go between tree rows. I have a deep respect for the farmer as many of my closest friends and patients are still going strong even with present grain prices. I have owned a MF 50I, Allis D14 but currently have a 68' 4020D that will be my workhorse for this year and hopefully many to come. I will plant 22" rows and irrigate with Rocky Mountain runoff if the Lord wills

Great Question

I and my family farm about 320 acres of almonds, oranges, hay and cereal grains. I am 49 and have an Agricultural Engineering degree from Fresno State University, California. We are 3rd generation farmers in the San Joaquin valley of central Califronia. My grandfather started farming Thompson seedless grapes for Sun Maid raisins in 1911. We would like to grow all permanent crops but the financial risk is extremely high, so we grow grains on about on the open ground. Water is extremely precious and expensive. Equipment ranges from 1998 John Deeres to 1941 Case SC. I still work a professional day job because of my educational background and the unstable farming economy. My son goes to college and does most of the farming except for harvesting.

I'm a 52 accountant at Ford in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. I recently purchased an old (1885) farm house on 1.5 acres that was severed from a 60 acre farm. I worked on farms as a kid an enjoy the country. I hope I get a chance at the rest of the farm if it becomes available. I'd like to share crop soy beans and corn.
Our farmers have the same concerns as the U.S. with commodity prices very low while expenses are ever increasing. I admire the vast amount of knowledge the farmer gains by being so self reliant and the long, hard days on the land. My dad was an auto mechanic who fixed many tractors in his day.
I have a Ford 3000 with a blade to clear my drive, and travel up and down the lane. I would rather do that then attend meetings, answer phones and work on a computer any day.
I salute all the farmers.....you do a great service.

Hi, I'm a 66 year old retired(sort of) machine tool mechanic. 10 years ago I thought I would never want to retire but then the job got so damned complicated with new management ideas and japanese built machines that I got out when I turned 65. I came back here to so. mich. where I grew up from California where I spent most of my working life. I've got two John Deeres like I thought I wanted when I was a kid-an "A" and a "GW",pretty well restored but stock( the G will still burn kerosene) Anyhow it seems really sad to see what a struggle it is for most of the farmimg people to "stay afloat". This country isn't like I thought it would be-and farming is not the rewarding occupation it used to be-not for very many at least. I guess a country whose main products are millionaires and billionaires doesn't appreciate people who supply food, who are in the mud and the dung trying to make a living 'cause it's what they love to do. It is just sad-and we call it progress. Thank God for the memories and satisfaction old farm tools bring us with that background. Bless You All.

Follow up responses to this post has been most enjoyable. There seems to be people from all walks of life interested in old tractors and farming in general.
I am a Canadian, and a Maritimer living in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia.Apple farming has been big here in the past but not so now. Many of the small family farms here have been absorbed into large farming operations. I grew up on a family farm here.Livestock, hay gathering, potatoe farming and woods work were all a part of daily life for me as a farm boy.
We had a 35 Massey Ferguson, and a John Deere B.I spent many hours on these tractors as a kid plowing, discing, cultivating, spraying, hauling hay, wood and whatever else on the farm.I still enjoy tractors to this day.
I am 53+ and have worked for the local school Board in the Maintenace department for the past 30 years.
I own 30 acres adjoining the original farm I grew up on.My dad sold the farm and is now retired living next door but still has the Massey Ferguson. The John Deere B was sold a number of years ago. To make a good living from these small farms became increasingly difficult when I was young. There was plenty of hard work but little pay.As a result I looked for something else to do for a living but never lost my love for the farming way of life.
My last tractor was a John Deere A.It reminded me of the B I used to use as a boy on the farm.It was great, the putt, putt, the pull this tractor had and all.The stuff memories are made of for sure.
I sold it and now have a 510 John Deere.I now use it mainly for snow blowing in the winter and basically play around with it in the summer. We have a few strawberries this year.
I enjoy this forum and have been lurking, following the list, sometimes posing questions and receiving very good information back from others. It is a joy that meaningful information can be distributed to others so freely through this forum.
I have been lurking on tractor forums ever since Spencer Youst began with his antique Tractor Forum.Great Stuff!!

Well, I'm not exactly a farmer. Although I wouldn't mind it a bit. I love old iron, just about any color. I grew up working for my neighbors on their farms, during harvest season. My dad is an editor for the Progessive Farmer magazine which are more popularly know as "The Farmer" and the "Dakota Farmer". When I was a kid, I went on "interview" trips with him through the Dakotas and Minnesota- it was pretty neat seeing all the different farms and farmers my dad interviewed for stories in the magazines. My parent's homestead is near Fargo, ND, about 10 acres with the old "dutch style" barn and grainery buildings. We have run a hobby farm over the past 20 years ranging from canteloupe to pumpkins- which is now the main crop. We use '39 Farmall H for the hobby farm. It's been in the family since my grandpa bought it back in the 50's. We usually get a few looks from farmers as we drive the "H" to the pumpkin fields for some cultivating work- quite a site compared to their modern day equipment. I'm 27 now, living in St. Paul, working as a engineer, but I make it home often to keep that old H going. I just picked up a Farmall 300 to restore, and a Cockshutt 30 my dad doesn't know about yet.... Thanks for all the help and advice offered through this site!

Not a farmer, but worked on a farm for 5 or 6 years during high school and early college. Just bought 40 acres in Western Pennsylvania and once we get a house built, I will start playing at farming while keeping my full time job. Currently only have one tractor, but dream of owning several as I love them all.

I'm not a farmer but I have the utmost respect for those who are. I married into 40 acres, 20 in hardwood forest and the other 20 in way overgrown Christmas trees. Gonna plow them down this spring and put up pasture for my wife's hay-burners and about 15 acres of hay. My M will be ready for that!
My thanks to all the farmers out there who feed the nation.

Depends on how you define farmer! Earns a living doing it? Probably a lot of "real" farmers wouldn't qualify!

Me? Was raised on this farm, 120 acres in mid-Michigan, we had dairy, pigs, chickens, and raised hay, corn, beans, oats and potatoes. As we continued, we specialized more in dairy, dropping beans, pigs, chickens and potatoes - each time the dairy output increased. My dad retired in the early seventies, and sold virtually every piece of equipment on the place. He died in the mid-eighties, and I have been trying to keep the place moving foward. Have it all in hay, livestock is 75 rabbits, and 1 cat (today's count). We sell and show the rabits, sell hay, and some wood, and have a huge garden, - does that qualify us as farmers?

Wife grew up on a dairy farm, is now in nursing at the local hospital. I teach as a substitute, and also driver education, although my degrees are in physical chemistry and educational administration.

We have a Famall 200, courtesy of my retiring father-in-law, and a Deere B, formerly owned by my wife's late uncle, she's thrilled it's still in the family. I'm loving it, because there are only minor diffeences between it, and the B I grew up on. Have a small collection of impliments that allow me to keep up with the farm.

Are we farmers? Probably not, but our hearts are in this farm, so I think we are!

If you're a farmer in your heart, then no amount of 10,000 acre farmers can say that you aren't(at least honestly).

Howdy dudes,
Spent my first 20 years raised on a dairy farm in Michigan, the next 20 years teaching band in Houston. Miss farming sence I left MI but the old family farm was 30 miles north of Detroit and swallow-up by high taxes and urban spraw. After 20 years in Houston, I ended up with 5 acres and 30 llamas (which the wife and kids show at live stock shows), 6 arab hores, 3 pot bellies, too many cats, 3 dogs and one EMU (where's the beef).
At present I have 8 tractors, 2 of each color except red. Trying to by an AC G from a neighbor. His wife may trade for a llama. Still working on him.

Planning on moving to NW Montana this summer. Looking for acrage in the Kalispell area. Would like to find a farm of about 80 to 120 acres.
Wife wants to start a christian dude ranch with cabins. You know of any land for sale in that area, give me an email.

Always wanted to be a farmer but never could aford it. I don't know how you guys with over a million dollars invested in machinery make it on those grain and milk prices.

Wife said I spend too much time on this board and not enought with her and the kids. What do you all think. Now I mostly read this board after midnight when family is asleep.

I enjoy reading all the info and it sure is helping me on my restoration projects. Currently I'm working on my AC IB.

Thanks guys..... why don't I see any girls names on these posting.?????

Never farmed but have helped friends on occasion. Just a 67 year old retired educator (Electronics, Math and Physics) Have almost always lived in the country. Now live (in a log house I built in 1977)in sw Wisconsin on 20 acres of hillside that was once pasture but has had 24 years to grow. (it did). Have a 700 ft long up(or down depending on whether you are coming or going) hill driveway. Have old iron to do chores around the place, like plow snow, haul wood and pull a trailer for the grandkids to ride on. Belong to a couple of old iron clubs in sw Wisconsin and ne Iowa. That way I get the enjoyment with out the cost and the need to house more old iron. Really enjoy the board and agree that we should include our location in each post we make. LONG LIVE OLD IRON. Lew Van Vliet, Richland Center, WI Bye the way, my Case VAC sits in one side of a double car garage while my pickup sits outside. The wife's van is in the other side.

38 yrs old - Grew up as a logger's son running on a horse ranch in North Idaho (Priest Lake to Bonners Ferry area). We raised running AQHA horses on open range. Herd was generally 250+ mostly King, Leo and 3Bars brood mares & 5 studs.

Had the obligatory beef, hogs and chickens for the freezer. Best place we ever had was about 300 acres with a river running thru it. Never farmed while coming up, but always hayed in the summer and worked ranches for the big guys. Did my patriotic duty and left for the Navy in '80, got out after 1 tour. Now a Systems Mgr for large 3PL (whse & trucking) firm.

Currently own 35 acres of plantation pines (pulp wood) in NE FL bordered by Nat'l Forest and Timber companies. Chose pine trees since it is easier crop than farming. Very little maint., plant every 3 yrs. and just watch 'em grow. Land also has various wildlife food plots & 4acre fish pond recently stocked with bream, channel cat, coming this spring some FL bass.

Negotiating lease on another 25 acres behind me to try my hand at hobby farming (U-pick operation) blue berries, corn, beans, okra, spuds, tomatoes & pasture for the obligatory freezer beef/hog. Got my wife, 2 boys (9&10), 22 American Bulldogs!!Rigs have always been CHEVY!! Tractors are a '67 Oliver 550 Dsl (iron hoss), '61 AC D10 Series II (mystery AC) & a '79 MF TLB. Daily commuter to day job, but labor of love is "working" my place.

Thanks to all for all I have learned from here and in the future - plan to draw on some of that farming experience!!!!

I'm a farmer/student at the moment. Go to school during the week, go home to farm on the weekends. When I graduate in 2004 from ag engineering I plan to go home to the farm and be full-time within 5-6 years of graduation. I am currently in the process of letting neighbors know that I will be available and that I will do a good job. Home is 800 acres of crops and 60 head of beef cows, half dads, half mine. Machinery consists of two CIH Magnums, 995CIH, a Kinze Twinline planter, and an Axial Flow 1640. We also have the usual assortment of new and older tillage and hay tools. My tie-in to this board is the JD 630 of mine. It has been used on this farm since 1959 when it was brand new. It only gets pulled out to pull a feed wagon when everything else is in use elsewhere now.

I've been a junior high teacher for 34 years, and won't quit that until it quits being fun! Still live on 8 acres of the central Indiana farm I grew up on. I spend my "farming" moments tending a huge garden and playing with the Farmall H, M, and SM we used to farm with. Sometimes when the urge is too great to ignore, I go help a neighbor during planting or harvest season for half a day or so just for the fun of it. I've never been turned down when I volunteered either my labor or my labor and tractor!

I am college student (Ag Engineering) at Texas A&M. I am from Carmine Texas. Grandpa farmed cotton and then turned to plumbing. Other grandpa was in the butane business, then turned to cow/calf hobby. Both have since passed away, but Dad and I still run all the same cattle and land. Overall, about 275 acres, all pasture with around 45 acres of coastal and haygrazer for hay. Farm with 2755 and 2040 Deere, 684 International, and restoring Farmall A. Equipment is all brands, most about 15 years old. Newest eqipment is a '98 Case 650G bulldozer.

I'm a professional computer geek, turn 41 on Saturday. I grew up in town mostly but worked for my grandparents in their dairy summers and for my uncle cutting/baling when I was a teenager. He had a JD720LP, I thought I was in hog heaven with a tractor that big! Now I use my JD50LP to plow and mow my 5 acres at home and use a Long 2610 to work my father's 250 acres. We plant wheat or oats (depending on how much they cost that year) for winter grazing and cut them for hay in the spring to feed the cows.

Now I live in the country but commute to Dallas to my day job. If I keep farming, I may have to get a second job! I don't see how you full time guys do it.

We farm 1200 acres, mostly small grains with a few acres in alfalfa for the cattle, most of the field work is done with a Versatile 835 8wd articulating tractor, for the loader work I use a JD 4630, for the small field work and haying I use the old JD 820, which is my favorite on summer days, I am thankfull for the cab tractors at night and in the spring and fall when it is cold ( I live in ND, it gets cold here )CS

Not by any serious definition. I keep a llama, a half dozen sheep and 3 dozen laying hens year around, and turkeys and chickens for the freezer in the Spring and Summer. Don't grow anything outside a veggie garden, do what I can to maintain 3-4 acres of grass pasture.

I don't keep too close a track of how much my hobby costs me, that would ruin it. I manage it on my Navy retirement, so it can't be much ":^)

I told a guy at work one time I was taking the afternoon off to do some plowing. He wanted to know what my cell phone number was in case he had to call me. I told him if he could find a cell phone on my 43 M he could feel free to call me. Some of the stuff those old tractors don't have is priceless.

I'm a Full Time Pilot. I farm my Dad's ground in my spare time. I grow hay because the deer eat too much of the other crops. My Grandfather was a dairy farmer in the Sixties and I was just far enough from the work that I never learned to hate it. When I look down on the fertile farms of Pennsylvania, I long to be farming Full Time. I'm sure the farmers I so envy would rather be making streaks in the sky. I burn my vacation in July to make small square bales of Timothy hay. It gives me such respect for those who work so hard on a daily basis. No kick balers for this Cowboy, I hump'm up like my Pap did in the old days. Let me add this: It is easy to see from the air how this old machinery gets worn out. The plows we see at auction have been dragged through miles of abrasive soil for years and years. The old machines that we mess with, some of which are in remarkably good condition, are a testiment to the forsight and ingeniuity of the AMERICAN'S who worked so hard to get this country where it is today. Do something today that will amaze someone fifty years from now, my Grandfather did.

Don't know what I am- I work full time at the local VA hospital as an engineer and farm 1000 acres of dry land wheat (SE Wyoming). Raised on place I now farm, got away from it for 30 years working construction and consulting engineering then when Dad passed away in 96 took it over. Probably a good thing I've got a day job the way farm prices are now. Work tractor is a 2wd JD 4960, play tractor is a 48 Farmall H. The best thing is after a day at work is to jump in that air conditioned cab, crank up the stereo and enjoy setting there watching the dirt turn over, wildlife moving around and no phones, meetings or any of the other bs.

im not a full time farmer now, i used to run 1000+ acres of row crops ,milo&wheat. baught a large industrial sandblaster, and started doing industrial jobs, along with rebuilding / painting tractors. i still have all of my equipment. 5088,886,&504, along with a deere 435 round baler. i cut back to about 300 acres of all hay ground. and converted all my wheat ground to hay. i can make more profit with my hay baler and 300 acres than with 1000+ crop acres.

I grew up on a farm in the 60's. I'm a chemist now but I hobby farm about 30 acres. I grow about 5 acreas of corn, 4 acrea of oats and the rest is hay. I feed a few ducks and geese, occassionally a cow and a pig and maybe a few turkeys. I sell the excess hay and it pays for the rest of the hobby. I have 5 of the old Internationals/Farmalls. The oldest is 1936 and the newest is 1955. Most of my machinery falls in that age group too. In a lot of ways I'm reliving my childhood without the finanial risk. I tell people I'd have a very modern farm if it was 1950.

Hello I'm a 37 year old dairy farmer in central MN
I milk 30 cows ( this is tough right now with the milk prices the same as they were in the late 70's
and todays expense), This is why I farm with older
equipment, my newest tractor is 30 years old.
I farm about 360 acres half hay- half corn, oats and barley. I have all colors Moline,Deere, Allis
IH, Massey and Versatile (I just bought this tractor this fall so it has not been in the feild yet.) This has been a very helpful website for me.

Thanks Bryan

I am a 30 year teacher and been farming since I could walk behind my dad and older brothers. My stuff is old, like me. My combine is better than 20 yr. old. My newest tractor is 13 yr. and my oldest is about 25. I grew up driving 8N's, 2 and 4000's, 4020's,a 530 case, and others. I like hearing about all the tractors and sharing ideas with kindred spirits from around the world. I guess that I had rather be farming than most any thing else. Just wish we could get a fair shake.

I am not a farmer. I was raised on a farm. I have a few acres and 4 tractors that I use to plant some food plots for the deer and turkeys. I have 2 of them restored. The othet 2 run well and they are the ones I play with while doing my most enjoyable tasks. I also have about a half dozen 2 wheeled garden tractors, restored that I love to play around and use.I'm not a wanna-be farmer because I know the problems they have today and how much hard work is involved in farming. I'm retired.

I would also like to know where the notes are comming from. I am from Ill. and wonder if I am talking to my neighbor in Ind. or someone in California. Thanks

Activly farming, cow calf operation, own 160 acres, rent 320, another 1/4 available. Very small venture, am in the process of retiring to farm full time. Have not had time to do any restorations, only the ones I use. ;) Newest machine I have is 30+ years old, but, still able to do a days work. I live in the foothills of the Canadian Rockys, [Alberta], Enjoy reading the posts on YT, even contribute the odd time, but not near as knowledgeable as the other fellows here.
Have a good day, REL

Are there any potato farmers from Maine out there? Just curious. I've picked a few million potatoes behind Farmall Ms and two row diggers.
