I was looking for an Oliver 550, but came across an Oliver 500 (gas) instead. Good running tractor, but I understand it's really a David Brown 850 in disguise, and I've heard various bad things about DB's. Other than the problem getting parts (which I'm prepared to live with) and touchy hydraulics, are these OK tractors or are they turkeys to steer clear of?

You had better keep looking for a 550.

I have only seen one or two ever. There are two things that will make a true Oliver man (like myself) want to cry. That series tractor and the Oliver tractors built by Fiat. Did you ever see a Fiat automobile that was any account? They may be O.K. as long as you never have a problem with them. If you do--watch out. When I worked parts for the White dealer I just wanted to run and hide when someone came in with any one of those. Only ever had one call on a 500 and could do the man no good at all.
