I'm in the process of building storage bins for mulch and rock. I may at times be selling some to others and want to know how to determine cubic yard capacity of my bucket. My bucket measures 69" X 24" and 19" deep at its deepest point. Thanks everyone and have a great new year!

You will need the height (or depth) for this conversion since a square foot is based on the length times width and a cubic yard uses length times the width times the heigth. You can convert the square foot to cubic yard by converting the square footage to inches and using the formula by multiplying the length x width x height to get cubic inches (CI). Then your conversion formula would be: Cubic yards = CI/1768/27 or length x width x height inches divided by 1768 then divided by 27.

Good advice below but maybe an easier way. Load your bucket with a normal load and they dump it in a clean area of concrete or on a couple of pieces of plywood. then shovel it into a know measuremnt containers - 55 gal drum, 30 gallon trash buckets. or make a bin of wood that holds exactly a cubic yard / 27 cubic feet. A 3 X 9 form of 1X12's comes to mind. This may be an alternative for you

Not to cast a shadow on your project but you need to determine the impact that your state has on weighing items for resale. In many states it is illegal to sell without scales. You can charge a fee to load but you cannot sell by weight or cubic measure without state approved measuring equipment. Around here, for small operators for example, fill dirt is loaded at $5 per bucket and the truck driver/owner sells the load at a "delivery" price. The amount of dirt (in tons or cubic yards) is never entered into the price reflected on the bill. Knowing the size of your bucket will assist in determining the "loading" fee. Good luck.

Is the cross section of your bucket (shape of the side)not a rectangle but rather similar to a section of a circle with the bottom flat where it contacts the blade?

If so do the following:

Determine where the shape of the side of the bucket changes from a curve to straight. Draw a line from that point to the other end of the curve of the bucket. Measure the length of this line. Then find the midpoint of this line and measure perpendicular from that point to the back of the curve of the bucket.

Then measure from the point you earlier determined where the side of the bucket changes from a curve to straight to the front of the bucket.

Send me these three measurements and I'll calculate it for you.

If it's not clear what measurements I want contact me by email and I'll discuss it with you in more detail.

Hi PJ, LXHXW=ci/1728/27
L=length in inches
H=hieght in inches
W=width in inches ci=cubic inches
1768= ci in a cubic yard.
27= cubic feet in a cubic yard. Your is = .67c/yd cubic yard= 3'X 3'X 3'

I get close to 2/3 of cubic yard.
Length x width x depth /27. Use increments in feet. ie 24"=2', 19"=1.5'approx. etc

PJ,if your bucket is a full cube it would be 1 1/3 yrds.If your bucket is wedge shaped like most are,and the never fill 100%,you could bet on having an honest 3/4 yrds in yours.I'm far from a mathmatition,so listen to other opinions,but thats mine.Hope it helps

T-bone has the correct numbers.I used the squared # to convert from inches to yards,silly me..674 cubic yards is my final answer,based on a cube.Adifferent shape(radius or angled bottom)will reduce that.

You can measure with water. there are 231 cu in.. in one gl of water. 46,656 cu. in. in cu. yd. so if you fill bucket with 5 gl. pail just figure out how many gls or cu. in. of water. put the cu in. determined over 46,656 , and lower to lowest deniominator. that will be cu. yds. level bucket. have fun.

another route for this method

fill a few five gallon buckets with ur hose to see ur gallons per minute. then fill ur bucket and then mutiple ur g/m by the time it took to fill, then the rest of the math above
