Kubota L210 questions

My dad has an aging Kubota L210. Two or three years ago he replaced the starter with an aftermarket gear reduction unit. Recently he asked me to take a look at his machine because the starter was grinding but not turning over the engine. The good news is that the flywheel is OK. The bad news is that the starter gear is wiped. I suspect it was either the wrong pitch or was not correctly shimed because he uses the tractor rarely. (at 81 years old steering them manual steering jobs with a loader bucket attached is a workout!)

Anyway, I checked with the local Kubota dealer and they want almost $600 bucks for a new starter. My dad can't decide whether he wants to spend the money to fix the tractor or sell it as is and get a new (or newer) one.

Question: Is there a good source for an alternative starter that would cost less?

What might the value of this tractor be in rough numbers? (has loader, all hydrallics work well, engine still sound, tranny good, moderate to good tread) fair condition as far as looks. (still orginal paint)

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

JDD

I feel your pain! I have an L-225 of the same vintage and new parts are just a rip-off! Problem is that, around here in North Ga., that little tractor in its current condition would bring from $3000 to $5000! It is actually a great little tractor, especially with a loader on it. Newer models, be they Greene, Orange, Blue, etc., will start at $10,000 used.

If this were my machine, I'd check out these two options:

1. See if the local Alternator/Starter shop can rebuild it. Many times this only a fraction of the cost of a new starter.

2. Look in a salvage yard for one. I think the L-175, L-225, L-260, L-245, and maybe others used the same starter motor. I'll even bet the "Grey Market" Kubotas, like the L1501, L2001, L2201, etc. used the same starter.

Lastly, post your delima on the "Kubota" board on the link below. Lots of 'Bota guru's there.

Good advice. I had my kubota L1500 grey market starter completly rebuilt at the local starter/alternator shop for $48.00. The kubota dealer offered to do the exact same thing (send it to the local shop) for $300.00.
