Hi Gang;
A break in the rain last Friday allowed this local farmer to get a lovely crop of Ryegrass cut. The tractor is Massey Ferguson 4000 Series with 10foot mower-conditioner.
Cheers David

 Re: PHOTO - Mitch - rain water seed mixture in reply to David in Wales, 06-05-2007 02:09:55
Hi Mitch;
Our drought finished a couple of weeks ago, nice steady rain which has bulked up the crops. No irrigation here - plenty of moisture from above ! LoL. The clay soils here retain moisture although there is not much depth of soil over the rock. Being less than a mile from the sea, the salt winds can burn off crops.
A typical grass seed mixture for this area would be several types of Perenial Ryegrass (early, mid & late types) with some White Clover. The ley would be down for a long time and have to provide silage/hay and grazing.
Cheers David

Ryegrass is great feed. Perenial ryegrass was the largest percent of my seedings this year. Always good protien, energy, and digestability. Cows love to graze it as well.

Barnrat, Have you made any silage with the Perenial ryegrass?? I have been thinking about trying some. I live in southern Vermont and we crop mostly grasses and have only 20 acres of corn ,but we only milk 50-60 cows. I have a JD 335 round baler with the high moisture kit on it and we wrap all the bales. I did 1,200 silage bales last year. I was reading that Perenial rye was great feed and was thinking about trying some. I also was reading about planting sorghum-sudangrass and cutting it 3 times in a year and making bales out of that. I don't know if it would dry eoungh to bale.... I remember as a kid we used to plant it for green feed and cut it with a JD 16-a flail chopper. The cows ate it like candy.

I milk about 40-50 cows I chop most of mine for silage and put it in a tower silo, I also do rotational grazing. I do also have a 335 baler and make some silage bales late in the season after the silo is full. I seeded 20 acres of several different varities of perenial ryegrass mixed with orchard grass, red and white clover. I only grow 12-15 acres of corn for snapping I also grow about 25 acres BMR sorgrum sudan grass which I graze, chop or make silage bales out of. The rye grass that I have already estabished generaly turns out quite well testing about 18-20% protien .70 to.75 nel and great digestability. The sudangrass get two cuttings off of and after the second cutting I seed that to annual Italian rye grass. Hope that helps feel free to email me if you have any more questions.

David has the drought finished? Is this crop rain grown or irrigated? I was at a property today and they had not had meaningfull rain since January.

Mitch
