I recently saw a rumley at a local steam show. It's fascinating. Can anyone tell a novice like myself why it's called "Oil Pull" I understand this was something to with the cooling system. Did it use oil for cooling??? was the fuel oil also used as the coolant. How did these engines work ? All I could find out from the operator at the show is " It's Really unique" that's about all he would tell me. Sure would appreciate any information at all on these most interesting machine from the past. Also is there a site where i might get technical information on how these things operated. ??? Sure would appreciate any information. Thanks ... Peter ... a new Rumley Nut.

I remembered your post and got a quick look at a Rumely oil pull at the big threshing show at Rollag Minn. Yes they used oil as coolant. From the book"AMERICAN GASOLINE ENGINES" says the oil pull used oil in it's radiator and the higher cylinder temp was part of the reason for their ability to run cheaply on kerosene. They did not use a radiator fan, they have a smokestack like cover on the radiator and have the exhaust blowing out the top of the stack to create a draft to pull cooling air through the radiator.

Take a look at www.rollag.com
