HOW MANY SNAKES PER ACRE WHEN BALING HAY?

It seems each time I make hay, the snakes usually find their way into the hay rake and baler.

Here in SW Ohio, we don't have much of a snake problem particularly with venomous ones, but black snakes and garder snakes seem to show up just at the time I'm baling hay. I'll either find them cut up on the ground from the mower or cut up by the tines when tedding. If not there, I'll find them when I feed out the hay during the winter.

There's hardly anything that sinks worse than a rotting snake in a bale of hay. But, as far as I'm concerned, the only good snake is a dead snake.

What's your usual snakes per acre when baling hay?

Any unusual stories about snakes and hay baling?

The absolute WORST thing we ever baled was when a SKUNK went through the baler! And those clowns in the field decided that since they were gonna have to live with the smell in the baler for the rest of the day, that the bale with the skunk should go up into the barn so some of the rest of us could enjoy it! You haven't had a bad day until you've shared a hot haymow with a baled skunk!!

A while back we were baling wheat straw and needed some extra help, so we got a city boy out to help us. This kid was a weightlifter and football player, so needless to say, he thought he could outwork us farmers. Anyhow, he and I were on the wagon and I was stacking a bale in the back when I saw him waving his arms and pointing to a bale. He was as white as a ghost. So, I rolled the bale over and there was a coon stuck in it. Only it's head was sticking out, and of course, it was screaming and snapping. I turned around to laugh at the city boy, but he was gone! He was 20 rods down the field. I've never seen someone move so fast. Afterthat, he was pretty careful with the bales.

We seem to run about 1 or 2 an acre but they're non-poisonous so far. A family of what appear to be kingsnakes has taken up residence in the twine chamber of the NH68 and needs to be shooed out before we start out.

Northern watersnakes live in the hay shed and look much like copperheads but they are not very aggressive...so far.

Up home in western Wisconsin years back when hay was shocked and then forked up to wagons, people had to watch out for rattlesnakes which had crawled into the shocks and would ride up with the hay. The guy up leveling the load appreciated the warning, or so they say.

When I was in my teens, I baled hay all summer long. I used to have to round up some of my school friends to come work. I always worked the wagon, because the work was steady, I liked the sunshine, and I hated the dust in the barn.

Ther was a black snake or Gardner snake in a bale on at least every wagon. I used to take a hay hook and pull the bale on the wagon, roll it once before stacking it. Of course when the wagon got full, you couldn't do this. I used to get the #$%#$ scared out of me. The owner who ran the baler used to laugh his tail off. Of course I would carefully set that bale up top for the barn guys!

I was always amazed how well a lot of snakes made it through the baler. Thanks for reminding me of that. This may be revisionest history, but always remember fondly the feeling of satisfaction at the end of a day of bailing.

take Care
Steve

You ain't lived til' you go to a South Florida sugar cane fire. All kinds of critters run out ahead of the fire, lots of snakes too!('cept they crawl ,not run.)

You folks can scare a guy. Up here in Alberta our biggest fear is a belt breaking or too much rain {or drought}.Gators and snakes are the last thing on my mind.I have never cnsidered some of the things you fellows mentioned.

Yeah critters are the reason around here when you see a baler or tractor broke down that you see one man working on it and another one just standing close by, the close by guy is on critter watch.

It's also the reason a shotgun is standard issue in the fields.

I wish we had to worry about rain. All we've had to worry about this year is no rain.

These guys in the rice fields are the ones who have to worry. It's nothing uncommon to see hundreds of cotton mouths aday in the rice patches.

I live in SE Texas and we have to dodge cotton mouths, copperheads, and a few rattlers. Here you're liable to run across anywhere from 10-20 per day, that's just the one's you actually see, there's no telling how many go unseen.

You have to be careful around here because for some reason the snakes seem to come to the vibration and noise of the baling.

When you get too close to a gator nest is when you have problems around here. That gator mama will tear a tire off a tractor in just a chomp. These gators will chase a tractor like a dog chases cars.

I quit picking up my hay after dark years ago when I picked a bale up with about 18" of moccasin sticking out. The only thing that kept me from getting bit was the way he was stuck in there he could'nt reach me.

Mongo & GEO, when you get that rattled there is'nt any britches seat left to have a stain in it anyways.

The tough part of it is that you spend the next week or 2 jumping over sticks, old pieces of wire, and all ropes. Everything looks like a snake for a while.

I'm from southern Ohio and we would occasionally find a snake in a bale, but don't recall any scary situations with them. But I do recall that if ever we come across a bumblebee nest in the ground in a clover field, they might as well shut off that Wisconsin motor on that baler (and you know how hard they were to start after their warmed up) cause me and that ornery cousin of mine and a dog named Nig would fight till there weren't no fight left in them. I can recall running from a swarm and hearing ol' Nig running right along side of me yelping as one of them stung him and me raking them out of my hair at the same time. Seems like they always headed for your hair. Good thing us boys couldn't grow a beard. Another thing was you would occasionally bale up a field mouse and I almost had to eat one for putting it down cousin Dick's shirt. And then theres the time that the old H tickled a hornet's nest in a tree as I was closin the gate. The guy driving, (Jack McCray), his face looked like a monster when they got through with him. I only got popped once, after I stopped laughing and on his advise to run. If Bubba says he can't fast dance, he ain't never had a swarm of hornets after him. You ever done any dancing? L8R----Fred
