I have a Wheel Horse 14-38 HXL Hydostat and am having problems with speed when on flat ground and it will slow to a crawl on a grade. At times on a steep grade it will not go at all but growls. The local dealer seems to be stumped and has left me with trying several things. I replaced the belt, put extra spring on tensioner pully. I removed the transmission and drained and reinstalled trans oil. It helped for a while until it got warm and repeated the problem. I think the the pump may need replaced. The transmission is a 0500 hydro-gear.I need help!

Hello...
I have the same model from 1996.
It is weak in reverse but fine going foeward.
Should I change the trans oil?
If so, how much and what type is needed?
Thanks in advance for any info.
Mark

The Hydro Gear 0500 uses 77 ounces of 20W-50 oil. I filled mine until it was at the breather tube hole. Then I did the purge procedure (40 feet forward, 20 feet back 3 or 5 times)and then topped off the oil to the breather tube hole again. Make sure that the bypass lever is all the way forward. Hope this helps.

I have a similar problem with a Poulan 20hp 42" riding mower, automatic transmission, Hydro-Gear.
I have the rear end out of the tractor, but hesitate to take it apart without the manuals.
the numbers on it are 166768, 314-0510, and 0230H6162. It just barely made it back to the shed the last time I used it, and it won't move at all now in forward or reverse. Reverse went bad first with forward capability diminished, then the forward capability totally went bad.
Anyone know where manuals for this transmission can be had? Thanks in advance, Ken.

I would like to do this work myself. Could anyone tell me where I might get an overhaul manual for this hydro-gear transmission 0500? Also would like to know the level of difficulty to expect and a supplier for the parts. Thanks Joe
