Hey there flapjack, it don't take a nuclear physicist to realize what you're doing by making such a great contribution here with such an intelligent and meticulously well crafted statement. Now maybe you'll get a reaction from a few thin skinned people, and maybe that's what floats your boat, but know this, no matter where you go in life you ain't no better than then next guy, even if he farms a window flower box hanging off an apartment building in NYC !!! Any wise old farmer knows you get more bees with honey, than with vinegar, so what is your point by saying something like that, why don't you tell us how you really feel..... on second thought don't trouble yourself, you already said enough to remove all doubts about what people think about you, we'll let you fill in that blank. Come on now, man up and admit it, won't hurt a bit, dont' fear the yuppie wanna-be small time gardeners, they won't hurt you LOL - sorry dude, hard to resist, seriously, statement like that has no value here, here's .50 cents, try again !

I have 70 acres row crop, out of 200. About 30 acres is hay, the rest grazing and timber.

Got my Form CCC-1099-G from the FSA office today.

My Direct and Counter Cyclical Program payments (subsidy) for 2008 was $336.00

Not getting rich off that.

I have no problem with small time/wannabe farmers.

I am a wannabe pilot. Would hope those with planes would not make fun of me. They always seem to be a helpful lot.

We are all wannabe somethings.

Gene

I will admit I am a wannabe farmer. I do not have the knowledge nor equipment to farm full-time, but I do enjoy it very much as a hobby and I am learning a lot from the guys on here. I am sorry for those who feel the need to bash others for enjoying farming but not growing up on nor inheriting a farm. For those like me, thank you to all you who have answered questions and supplied helpful advice through the years. I hope you are not a dying breed.

As oppossed to what? Mega-acre commercial farmers who subsist om govt programs? I hear lots of complaints here about bailouts to the banks and auto industry but nothing about govt subsidies to commodity farmers or ethanol=biodiesel customers of commodity frmers, Fair is fair.

I work with a neighbor who gets somewhere around $160000. a year from the gvt compared to my $12000. I'm in much, much better financial shape then he is. The really big farmer who makes his total income off the farm can end up in money trouble in a really big hurry. What counts is how much we have to retire on, not how much we gross during our productive years.

The corporate farmers we gripe about are the Ted Turners of the farming world. Jim

I fit the wanna-be category and as I acquire equipment and land, I'll be moving into the hobby category farming 100ish acres for forage.

I wish I could afford to be a full time farmer but the cards fell where they fell. I didn't have parents to hand down land so what I've got so far has been earned by my wife and I. No regrets...but the love and more importantly RESPECT that I have for agriculture is my driver. I feel that farmers get a bad rap....but to me, a good farmer is one to be admired. They have to know business, biology, chemistry, engineering, mechanical and the list goes on and on.

So poke fun at those on this forum and farmers as you wish piggy. Reality is....without farmers (large or small), you wouldn't be eating.
