Hi all, I'm looking at a 2002 Chevy 3/4T w/Duramax & Allison tranny. It's got right at 100,000 miles on it. Crew cab 4x4. I've never owned a diesel and never bought a vehicle with this many miles on it. It will be used for daily driving as well as hauling a tractor or two, sometimes 500 miles or more.

What's your thoughts on
- Things to watch out for (known problems, or your disasters)

- what you've seen for fuel mileage - empty/loaded.

- any other thoughts

Thanks

Have an '05 crewcab 4x4, great truck. I believe there was some issues with the earlier ones like the other guys said. If I drove more on the interstate, the '06 with one more gear should would be nice. When this is empty running 70mph, the engine just runs way too fast. Never pulled with anything better. Pulled a 30' gooseneck with a 2255 Ollie on top with a cab (about as aerodynamic as a brick) and it ran great. Never had any problems and it started just fine when it was -15 the other day.

Mines the "07 Classic 4x4, before they changed the body style. I love it, tons of power, good brakes, rides great. I put a cold air intake and a chip, keep it on the tow/economy setting (+60 hp). Thing runs like a scalded dog if I"m feeling like a teenager. I gotta make complaint here: There is not a 3/4 ton duramax diesel out there that gets 25 mpg, unless its going down hill with a stiff breeze at its back for many miles and the engine shut off. The Dodge guys are the worst, at the diesel pump "I get 27 on the hiway". BS. Maybe they make those trucks, but they don"t sell them to me. On a long highway trip averaging 65 mph and burning several tanks of fuel, mine got 19.2 once. Using math, not the truck"s computer. Expect 16 mpg around town, 17-18 on the hiway, and 9-12 towing. I"ll get off my soapbox, I don"t know much about the early models but my "07 is great.

The people I work with had an 02 Duramax and the one time I checked the mileage it did 18 mpg running empty doing 65 on the interstate. When they got rid of it at 260000 miles water was getting away somewhere but they couldn't find where it was going. Maybe it was the head gasket. I do know they got it hot once. Jim

mine is an 06, 2500 have had no trouble with it. gets around 19 mpg at the speed limit. going faster its less, which is normal. pulled 2 w4 mccormicks on a 24 ft.trailer over 600 miles home. no problem pulling at 75 miles per hour or passing, lots of power. good riding. with this kind of load the mileage dropped lots probably down to almost half. i have owned and driven all the gm diesels includeing the 350 olds conversions, those were garbage. another thing this duramax is very easy starting. overall its a good truck.

My buddy is a mechanic and he says to stay away from any that are older than 2004. Apparently they had some problems with the head gaskets on the early ones. A head gasket job is 30 hrs.He quoted the job (and got it) at 4-5 thousand. The truck he worked on has 140k on it and the head gaskets are leaking coolant. The owener of the truck says he also had the headgaskets done at 75k miles.

I am old enogh to still remember the dam Japs in the Big War, I will not buy a Chevy or GMC with the JAP motor. there was one here about one year ago that had 675,000 miles on it. his major complaint was the injectors, had them replaced five times, four time under warranty.

It's actually not a "JAP" engine. The rough castings come from japan, but all the machining and assembly are at the Duramax plant at dayton ohio.

Why do they cast in Japan and ship them all the way to Dayton for machining & assembly??? That makes no sense at all. John Deere has done casting work for GM in the past and transportation costs have to be less. Does someone at GM need a wakeup call?? I agree with Gold Leaf Deere, give the Jips nothing. I have never and will never buy their junk. I never thought much of GM diesels anyway, but I did buy an 08 Chevy pickup with a gas V6 and love it.

Mine is a little newer, a 2005 Duramax 4wd extended cab with Allison trans- 75,000 miles. With ladder rack, tool box etc., 14 -16 mpg.
Just finished getting both front hub assemblies replaced (it sounded like I was being followed by a helicopter everywhere). I rarely go off road, so I wasn't too happy about that. Steering shaft had too much play in it, was also replaced.
Other than that, its a great truck. Hope this helps. Ed

I just bought an '01 2500 xcab in Oct. with the Duramax/Allison...also has Edge Juice with Attitude, performance air filter, and open pipe....

I have been running the edge box on economy and with country hill driving its about 14-16 mpg..thats includes me idling it to warm up too...

I love the truck...has GOBS of power esp if you turn the box up...havent put a gooseneck plate in yet to tow with....plan on hauling hay and equipment with it....

I'm sure I could get 18+ on the highway this summer.....I have a few trips to make so I want to try it out....
