My son got a parking ticket in town last night and this law just has me shaking my head because I never knew there was such a silly law.

Lets see if I can explain this.
He was on a 2 way city street that has parallel parking on both sides. Lets say the street runs north and south. He was headed north and there was no open parking spaces on the east side of the street so he parked on the west side.
So his car is facing north; parked in a legal space on the west side of the street.
They give him a ticket for facing the wrong way.

Have you ever heard of such a law where you live????

Its called "parking against traffic". Automatic parking ticket. One of the six no-nos of parking-like parking on RR tracks; at yellow curb, etc.

Here in MI we have it. I know first hand. Abt. 38 yrs ago. They call it a "prima-facia" law which I believe means you had to break the law to get there. And since you are there you are guilty...

Yep, it's a no no. The concern is the vehicle pulling in and out against oncoming traffic.
Go to court with your son and plead ignorance to the law, he might get lucky and get it reduced or even tossed out.
I got a ticket one time for putting a van my dad had in a parking lot off a busy street and placing a for sale sign on it. Came back that afternoon and discovered a ticket on the windshield. I called to see the cost of the ticket, it was 50 bucks. I took it to court and was called, went before the judge and explained I didn't know it was a law but was willing to pay but when I called and found out the fine was 50 bucks I decided to appear before him. He simply explained ignorance of the law was no excuse for breaking the law and I agreed. Then he asked the assistant to verify the cost of that fine which she did. He agreed with me that the fee was out of line for such a minor infraction, and he fined me 1 dollar plus court cost of 20 so for 21 bucks I walked out feeling like I had won..... .sort of.

There are no doubt hundreds of laws many of us have never heard of, so it should not come as a surprise. Cities can make their own traffic laws, so driver beware. Try this one on for size: no u-turns within 500 feet of a business establishment. No signs/markings required. Believe me, it is real in at least one of our US of A cities.

Thanks for the story, Scott. There is nothing wrong with upholding the law, no matter who is breaking it. I try telling Dad that when he gets a speeding ticket for 69 in a 65 with a trailer light out and he just doesn't get it.

They survived the cold pretty well. Dad had the calves sold before it got to that rotten 30 degrees below zero. A few days before that they had rain and the gravel roads were nothing but ice - 15 mph max with 4x4 pickup!

I was going to head up there this coming weekend as my brother bought a Powder Special 600 Arctic Cat and I wanted to play, but the engine seized on it yesterday. Don't know if they can get it fixed by the weekend... :(

Oh yeh this has been a law for a long time. It's not silly be any means.

What would you think if you seen a car parked like that?

And as the old saying goes, if one does it there will be more.

They walk among us!!

That has been against the law in Missoura since Noah came over on the Mayflower, or maybe that was the Lusitania, I forget.

That law has been around for ever. It is not legal to park with the front end of the car facing traffic, because to do so you have to drive the wrong way to get to the parking place which is for the most part unsafe but of course its only on safe if there is a lot of traffic. But it is in fact a law that has been around for decades

Friend of mine got a ticket for that on a back street in my hometown population 4000. I can see why it'd be considered dangerous on a busy 2 way street. You gotta pull out against both lanes of traffic with your blind side. He shoulda turned around the next block up and parked in the spot proper.

John,

Please don't tell me you'd even think of contesting that ticket?

I have no idea of what the law does or doesn't state in my area, much less yours BUT common sense should tell us that when, entering and especially, exiting a parking stall while facing oncoming traffic is not the smartest/safest thing to do..... ...As one of the other fellows mentioned, your son is lucky he didn't get a ticket for driving in the wrong lane as well..... ...

Be glad there wasn't an accident, take the ticket as a lesson, and move on..... ..... .

we have that law here, the big stink seems to be not that the car is facing the wrong way although thats part of it, as there are usually no reflective surfaces on the front but the thing they dont like is that according to them, you had to drive on the wrong side of the roadway theroeticly against traffic to get there

Yup, cheap(low cost) parking ticket. Alternative, if witnessed entering or leaving the space could be "over center line, while not passing". Higher priced ticket, plus moving violation with points.

If the parking spots were not parallel but rater straight in do you not cross the other lane of traffic to get in the spot.
What do you do if your drive way is on the left side of the street. Go around the block????? ???

Steven, when I was a young policeman, after recieving a complaint I once ticked several cars on this one street that parked on the wrong side. The next day the Chief called me in, he had several of the tickets and threw them in the garbage can and said "Scott, we don't do that here, you understand? Sure sir" I said. So the next morning I went back, when everyone was leaving to go to work I ticketed them for driving down the wrong side of the street. Moving violation, one point on DL, traffic school, fines, directly to the state computer, no garbage can rehab. The Chief never told me not to do my job again.
How did your family do during the cold ?

That law has been on the books for at least thirty, or probably fourty years in my home town of seven hundred.

Sorry, I don't mean to offend, but it just makes good sence to me for saftey reasons. Exceptions are emergency vehickles of course.

The last few years they have not been inforcing it as much as they did years ago. This winter we all go outside and look if we hear a vehickle coming, just like we used to on the farm when we lived down a long lane. The price of gas slowed our traffic. If we have a car accident in town on a week end, we know the cop car is involved--the only car out there 99% of the time.

I do think it is pretty much the standard in Iowa. We still have some horse laws that haven't been taken off the books.

TRACTOR RELATED----tractors with lugs prohibited! That sign was still up in a nearby town several years ago, but disapeared. I wanted to buy it, but was to late, gone and no one knows who took it down.

Yes, there is a city ordinance that calls for uniform parking within the spaces. Its only a $5 fine, I wrote 140ish of those in one night. It also covers parking in handicapped and in front of fire hydrants.

I received the same ticket when I was in college. Parked facing the wrong way in front of the house we rented, quiet street, almost no traffic, etc. Paid the fine. Don't remember why I ended up that direction now, but probably had a good reason at the time (at least it was to me.)

Good Luck

I had jury duty one time. This guy parked like that on the wrong side of a side street in front of his grand mother's house, eat'n a big mac before he went in. Old man was drunk as Cooter Brown hit his parked car head on. The way it worked was all 14 of us heard the case, then at the end they drew 2 numbers and those people were the alternates and did not get to deliberate. I got drew but knew the judge pretty good and did not want to go to work, so I stayed to hear what they said. Guy who got hit was banged up pretty bad and he was just asking for medical bills and lost wages for the month he missed work. Jury came back and said he did not get anything because he was illegaly parked.

Yep. Officers in Seward, Nebraska routinely ticket cars for that offense.

Also, when I worked in downtown Seward, I'd park in an uncontrolled parking spot and walk a block to work. I came out for lunch one day and found that during the course of the morning the City had erected a 2 hour parking sign in front of my car and the police had written me a ticket for parking over two hours.

Another time in Seward, I had a two hour parking ticket on my car when I had witnesses who had seen me driving down the street an hour and 20 minutes before the time on the ticket. I had an hour long confrontation with the Chief of Police over that one.

I think it is illegal in most places in KY. Not sure if city or state rule though.

think about it. You have to drive the wrong way on the other side of the street to get parked and unparked.
