I have a 1959 730 diesel that runs good, but it has an oil like sludge that leaks from between the muffler and exhaust manifold pipe. Is this a ring problem or something else

Archer, that black "goo" is normal if you just idle the tractor around or don't run it very hard. The diesel fuel and combustion water vapor mix & create that black "goo" that will seep out where ever it can. If you run the tractor hard under load for a while it will go away, if it doesn't then look for a problem.

ARCHER, I HAVE A720D, 730D, 80D, AND A 820D. ONLY THE 820D STARTED TO MAKE THIS 'GOO'. IT WASN'T LONG AFTER THAT IT STARTED TO GET LOOSE IN THE BOTTOM END(KNOCKING!) I HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT YOUR TRACTOR IS GETTING VERY TIRED, MAYBE NEEDING A MOTOR JOB. THAT'S WHAT CURED OUR 820D. SORRY FOR THE BAD NEWS, BUT WORN RINGS WILL ALLOW OIL TO SEEP BY AND THERE IS YOUR GOO. USALLY FOLLOWED BY A RAIN STORM OF BLACK DROPLITS APON THROTTLING UP THE TRACTOR.
