There are a lot of variables even between different models of the same manufacturer. There really is no STANDARD weight difference. I have hauled a lot of hay with both stepdecks and flats. You will have to consider the hay you will be hauling. I have used a 53 foot stepdeck and not weighed 80,000 gross weight, and have used a 45 x 96 aluminum flat and was surprised to be grossing 83,620 pounds. It's best to check out the weight and 5th wheel pin setting with the truck you will be using. Tractor Vet gave you a good answer. Wayne

you will find that depending on who's trailer you are looking at and if it is and all alum. or alum. deck with steel frame . A all alum. Ravens can be as light as 8900 lbs. and a heavy steel frame trailer that someone had made to haul coils and two loads at once can hit 15-16000 lbs . For haulen hay the best trailer would be a stepdeck of 48-53 foot and here again it depends on Mfg. as to lightweight of said trailer . ya would also want one on 22.5 rubber and not one on 15or 17.5 rubber . This knolage comes from alot of years on the road.

I pulled many a drop neck with 17.5's and had no more tire problems than 22.5's or 24.5's ,I think it all depends on how willing a guy is to use a tire gauge .but I always liked a tiempe better they seemed to take abuse better and needed reacrhed less often

just remember the old adage pound for pound stronger than steel.

Direct material weight difference--AL is 2/3 lighter than steel, but since more meat must be included for equivalent strength, I'd estimate about 40-45% weight reduction. Example for an equivalent 8000# steel trailer, the AL version would weigh between 4400 & 4800 #'s. And I'm sure you could find specific trailer designs which could beat that estimate with some strategic frame spacing and brackets.
