While trying to pull start '42 JD B,(engine not froze), while in gear when clutch is engaged, the rear flywheel side wheel will not turn, the other rear wheel does...One wheel turns the other doesn't in the mean time the engine doesn't run, backfires and pops...Does this sound like a gearing problem, I have good spark, maybe timing or carburetion...Thanks for any suggestions..

One wheel turns, other not means the one that does not has the brake or something else holding it and that would cause the engine to be turned at double normal speed. use the highest road gear you have, not any lower gear, if that tractor is the 4 speed pull in fourth, but if it is 6 speed pull in sixth and you will need only half as much power to pull it.

You don't have it in a high enough gear, when pull starting you need to use the highest gear or fairly close to it. I gotta go

Sounds like your trying to pull it in to low a gear. To do that you need to be up in one of the highest gears

Put the towed tractor one gear below road gear (sounds like you're towing in too low a gear); can't remember on those old Johns..... .3rd?

Backfiring and popping is pointing at the ignition side of things. Or, water in the fuel perhaps?
