IH 504 Gear Problems

I purchased an IH 504 gas powered tractor about a week ago. It was running well until yesterady. It seems I cannot shift into any gear while the engine is running. However, if I shut the engine off, I can cycle through the gears just fine. If I select a gear while the tractor is shut off, and start the tractor, the tractor moves. If I now try to switch to another gear while the tractor is running and I depress the clutch, it sounds like a very high pitched noise and a lot of vibration (it sounds like something is free spinning at high rpms), and I cannot select any gear unless I shut the tractor off again. I know it all sounds confusing. Any suggestions? Perhaps the clutch is slipping? A loose belt? Any direction would be appreciated. Please help. Please drop me an email here in facebook. Thanks

Jim.

Sounds like your throw out bearing has failed. To replace it you have to split the tractor. While your in there you might as well replace the clutch to.
